Our aims
The Brain Injury Community Integration Service (BICS) aims to maximise community integration outcomes for individuals with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and their families by supporting them manage their health conditions, increase independence, and improve the quality of life. The service provides a client-centred and goal-directed program for up to 12 months to help develop self-management skills, facilitate independence, and return to valued life roles.
The BICS service provides:
- Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) clinical case management
- Planning and establishment of sustainable support networks
- Training, advocacy and consultancy
- Capacity building strategies and interventions to adults with moderate to severe ABI living in the community.
How to access this service
To access this service a person must meet below inclusion criteria:
Inclusion criteria
- adults of working age (typically 16 to 70 years)
- primary diagnosis of moderate to severe acquired brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic)
- resides within Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service district
- Medicare eligible
- willing to participate
- has specific community integration goals
- informed consent provided
- medically safe and stable.
Exclusion criteria
- does not meet all inclusion criteria
- medically unstable
- where primary mental health diagnosis or drug/alcohol dependency is the principal cause of issues impacting community integration
- client currently engaged in an intensive rehab program
- diagnostic exclusions:
- progressive neurological conditions
- neurodegenerative disorders
- congenital disorders
- mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.
