Ninety junior doctors will launch the next phase of their medical careers at Gold Coast public hospitals this year.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today welcomed 749 medical interns to Queensland Health.
¡°On the Gold Coast, 90 new doctors are embarking on what I¡¯m sure will be long and rewarding careers in medicine,¡± Ms Palaszczuk said.
¡°Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital are excellent training grounds where they can learn from very capable and respected clinicians.¡±
Acting Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said the latest placement of interns reflected the Palaszczuk Government¡¯s commitment to delivering world-class health services across the entire state.
More than half of all the new junior clinicians are beginning their rotations in regional hospitals across Queensland,¡± Ms Fentiman said.
¡°I¡¯m also pleased to see that 66 of these junior clinicians have shown an interest in rural and remote medicine by accepting rural generalist internships.
¡°We recognise we have a role in equipping our future medical workforce with the necessary skills and experience and that¡¯s what we¡¯re doing.¡±
Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the new Gold Coast interns had worked extremely hard to get to this stage and congratulate them on the milestone.
¡°After participating in the orientation program to familiarise themselves with either Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital, the interns will begin rotations through a variety of units that may include general medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.¡±
Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is the only health service in Queensland to offer an expanded two-week medical intern orientation.
¡°Our 90 new medical interns are taking part in a comprehensive program of practical skill sessions, presentations, panels and actively shadowing previous interns in the clinical areas of the hospitals where they¡¯ll be based for their first rotation,¡± Chief Executive Ron Calvert said.
¡°We also recently appointed a Director of Clinical Training, Dr Matthew Links, an accomplished oncologist and medical educator, who will be pivotal in supporting our interns as they become part of the multi-disciplinary teams delivering quality patient care to the Gold Coast community.¡±
Each new intern is participating in a week-long orientation program to familiarise themselves with their respective hospital, its services and clinical practice and procedures.
They will then begin rotations through a variety of units that may include general medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and additional elective terms in other specialised areas.
